In the key of genius
Derek Paravicini and Adam Ockelford: In the key of genius
Born three and a half months prematurely, Derek Paravicini is blind and
has severe autism. But with perfect pitch, innate talent and a lot of
practice, he became an acclaimed concert pianist by the age of 10. Here,
his longtime piano teacher, Adam Ockelford, explains his student’s
unique relationship to music, while Paravicini shows how he has ripped
up the "Chopsticks" rule book. (Filmed at TEDxWarwick.)
A beautiful talk and performance.

A school in the cloud
Sugata Mitra: Build a School in the Cloud
Sugata Mitra talks about his Hole in the Wall project. Young kids in this
project figured out how to use a PC on their own -- and then taught
other kids. He asks, what else can children teach themselves?

City2.0 and Food
Cities have experienced an explosion
of interest in food justice all over the world in the last few years alone. We're
thinking more urgently and more intentionally about how our food is grown,
shipped, prepared, and shared than ever before.
Aquaponics is a method of combined fish and vegetable farming that requires no soil. The farmer cultivates freshwater fish (aquaculture) and plants (hydroponics) in a recirculating water system that exchanges nutrients between the two.
Carolyn Steel: How food shapes our cities
Every day, in a city the size of London, 30 million meals are served.
But where does all the food come from? Architect Carolyn Steel discusses
the daily miracle of feeding a city, and shows how ancient food routes
shaped the modern world.
